EV vs Gas Car Maintenance Cost Calculator
How does EV maintenance cost vs a gas car compare? Enter your annual mileage — this calculator annualizes both sides from published per-mile maintenance averages (about 40% lower for EVs) and shows the 5-year gap.

Estimate basis & methodology
Estimate basis: all figures on this page are estimates based on published U.S. national averages; actual costs vary by vehicle, location and shop. Get a written quote before authorizing any repair.
How the estimate works: gas cars are modeled at ~$0.10/mile of maintenance (oil, brakes, fluids, filters) and EVs at ~$0.06/mile (tires, brakes, cabin filter) — the ~40% gap reflects published national-average comparisons. Tires are included on both sides; EVs wear them faster (see data point).
Key figure
Unique data point: regenerative braking roughly doubles brake-pad life on EVs — a big slice of the ~40% maintenance gap. The offsetting cost is tires: EVs wear them ~20% faster from weight plus instant torque (commonly published range).
Worked example (you can verify by hand)
Input: 12,000 miles/year.
- Gas: 12,000 × $0.10 = $1,200/yr → $6,000/5yr
- EV: 12,000 × $0.06 = $720/yr → $3,600/5yr
- Saving: $2,400
Expected output: EV saves about $2,400 over 5 years (estimate).
Limitations — what this cannot do
- Excludes fuel/charging, insurance and depreciation — maintenance only.
- Out-of-warranty EV battery replacement is rare but very expensive; not modeled here.
- Your tire costs dominate the EV side — check your actual tire prices.
FAQ
Are EVs really cheaper to maintain?
Yes, on average about 40% cheaper on maintenance (estimates): no oil changes, far less brake wear, fewer fluids. Tires cost more, but don't erase the gap.
What maintenance does an EV need?
Mostly tires, cabin air filter, brake fluid checks, and inspections. No oil, spark plugs, transmission fluid, or exhaust work.
Do EV brakes last longer?
Much longer — regenerative braking does most of the slowing, roughly doubling pad life. Many EV owners go 100k+ miles on original pads.
What about EV battery replacement cost?
Rare within warranty (typically 8yr/100k mi). Out of warranty it's $5,000–$20,000+ depending on pack — the one catastrophic cost EVs carry, offset by its rarity.
